Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the practice of optimising your content so that AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI understand, trust and cite your brand in their answers. As more buyers ask an AI instead of scrolling links, GEO has become as important as traditional ranking. Here's what it is and how it works.
GEO vs SEO
Traditional SEO optimises for a ranking position: keywords, links and a spot in the list of links. GEO optimises for a citation: being named and quoted inside the AI's synthesised answer. Success is measured by citation rate and share-of-voice, not just clicks.
This matters now because around 60% of searches already end without a click. If the answer doesn't mention you, the visit never happens.
What the research says makes AI cite you
A peer-reviewed study by researchers from Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI and IIT Delhi tested what actually changes AI citation behaviour. Adding verifiable statistics improved visibility in AI answers by 41%. Credible quotations added 38%. Transparent, linked sourcing added 34%. Clear, fluent writing added 29%.
Just as important, the study found that keyword stuffing actively hurts. GEO rewards content that is specific, sourced and genuinely well written.
The three-layer approach
First, rewrite key content into concise question-and-answer blocks under 300 characters that front-load decision words like price, cost and your city. Second, ship machine-readable structured data: FAQPage, HowTo, Organization and LocalBusiness schema. Third, earn mentions on the third-party sources AI engines trust, such as reputable publishers and communities.
Together these give the model the structure, the proof and the corroboration it needs to name you.
